North American Bunad Research Project

If you can be of assistance to Laurann’s research into North American bunader, please contact her directly via one of the methods listed below!

I am researching North American bunader in relation to an exhibition that the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe is planning on Scandinavian dress (Norwegian bunad, Sami gakti, and Swedish folkdräkt) in 2020.

By North American bunad, I mean a Norwegian-inspired costume (outfit) that is designed specifically for a group of Americans or Canadians.  The group might be residents of a city or state, or a dance group or choir.

I’m especially interested in costumes for adults and that have been designed with elements that are important to the group, like embroidery of the state flower or using the colors of the group’s logo.

I’m aware of these bunads, but there may be more!
Stoughton, Wisconsin
Illinois
Texas (Norwegian Society of Texas)
Petersburg, Alaska
Norwegian-American Emigration, also called Leif Erikson
Peace and Environment

I’m also interested in knowing if groups have discussed the idea of a bunad, and maybe even started work on it, but didn’t continue the effort.

Please email () or call (563-382-9681).

Thank you very much.
