Convention Events

Our 2012 SON District Convention in Virginia Beach will feature our traditional activities, but some will be sprinkled with surprises. While all details are not finalized here is a snapshot of what to expect June 20 – 23, 2012. Be sure to check this page periodically as we update it.
- The traditional Golf Tournament is scheduled Wednesday morning at the Cypress Point Country Club at Virginia Beach. Transportation will be available from the hotel to the Country Club. Tee- off time is 8 a.m. Registration information is forthcoming.
- Vendor booths, well visited at any convention, will open at noon Wednesday and will remain open throughout the convention. Vendors will showcase such items as rosemaling by Monica Hoerl, customized bunads, Scandinavian jewelry, convention apparel and other Scandinavian items from napkins and Viking hats to trolls and dinnerware. Learn more about Land of the Vikings, the district's cultural and recreational center, located in southern Pennsylvania with an extended menu of activities. Perfect for family reunions, group and church meetings, and anyone who appreciates the peace and beauty of the area.
- Under the coordination of our District Cultural Director Kristin Stone of the Washington Lodge, during the Convention attendees will have a first-hand look at the varied talents of members and others displaying their Folk Art. View the Folk Art Competition and Cultural Skills Exhibition Guidelines and Rules
- Our very special Candlelight Memorial Service is late Wednesday afternoon when we honor those members who have departed since the 2010 District Convention. A very solemn and thoughtful service, this gives attendees an opportunity to reminisce about friends and fellow members who have been part of our SON family.
- The President's Reception Wednesday evening at the hotel will be festive and includes a Scandinavian Smorgasbord. Our 10 Past District Presidents have been invited to join us and will be recognized during the event. They have guided the district and represent hundreds of years of leadership. This is a time to greet old friends and make new ones.
- Our convention business theme Thursday is "Wear your Viking Pride Shirt Day" with a drawing for a year's SON membership. That means you have to purchase a shirt and wear it proudly, and hopefully more than one day to express your enthusiasm for Sons of Norway and this Convention/Centennial Celebration.
- Our very popular Viking Auction is Thursday evening in the hotel, with bidding open during the day. This year's Auction will include entertainment to celebrate our Centennial (see the Centennial Events). Lodges are encouraged to participate with an auction item, cash or in-kind gift. Be creative and let's have some real fun raising money to support District causes such as the Charitable Trust. More information is forthcoming.
- Our Friday evening event outlined on the Centennial page is sure to be a "one of a kind" evening on the Norfolk waterfront.
- The competitive Viking spirit will be strong Saturday morning as several lodges with replica Viking boats will take to the waters at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens for a Florida-style Regatta with crews pitting their rowing and sailing skills against each another. Transportation to and from the hotel will be provided. To learn more access the Regatta page.
- The Installation of District Officers is late Saturday afternoon which is when we recognize and thank the outgoing district board and officially welcome the 2012/2013 Board.
- As the 2012 Convention and Centennial wind down the Saturday evening Reception and Grand Banquet at the hotel will cap the fun-filled and memorable four days of celebration. In addition to great food and ambiance, several special awards will be presented. Expect the unexpected!
